The air heat pump is a machine based on Carnot’s Cycle: it absorbs the heat of a primary source to transfer it to a second source at a higher temperature. Air heat pumps are very common: they are used in all refrigerators, in most air conditionings and, lately, in all temperature-control systems.
Air heat pumps are reversible, so they can be used to heat or to cool.
What does the geothermal solar energy system have to offer with respect to an air conditioning which uses an air heat pump?
The energy efficiency (supplied energy / absorbed energy) depends on the temperature of the source which supplies the heat to the condenser. Conventional air conditioning systems absorb the heat from the atmosphere, which can attain below 2ºC temperatures during winter. At these temperatures, the efficiency is lower because the condenser does not receive a lot of heat. In summer, the air heat pump has to reduce the ambient temperature, which can be at 40ºC. In this situation, the efficiency is not optimum.
In a geothermal system, since the temperature source is constant, the efficiency is always optimal, regardless of the atmospheric temperature conditions.
